The Top 10 Alabama Daily Newspapers by Circulation

Newspapers in Alabama got their start back in 1811, with the advent of the (now defunct) Mobile Centinel – and yes, that’s the correct spelling! Just 39 years later, Alabama boasted 82 newspapers across the state including nine dailies. Since then, the Yellowhammer State has played host to a total of around 2,000 newspapers (including free online publications).

    Based in Florence, Alabama, TimesDaily was founded The Florence Times in 1889 and serves four counties: Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, and Lawrence.

  • 3. The Anniston Star
    Serves Anniston and six surrounding counties, and founded in 1883. Owned by Consolidated Publishing Co.

    Founded in 1829 as The Planter’s Gazette, the Advertiser is published by Gannett.
  • 5. The Tuscaloosa News
    Published by Gannett and founded in 1818, the Tuscaloosa News is one of Alabama’s oldest newspapers and has received two Pulitzer Prizes.

    TServing Opelika, Auburn and surrounding communities, the News was founded in 1904 as the Opelika Daily News.
  • 7. The Decatur Daily
    Published five days a week, the Daily serves Decatur and Alabama’s Tennessee Valley.

    Serves Gadsden and northeast Alabama and published by Gannett.
  • 9. The News-Courier
    The News-Courier is based in Athens, Georgia and serves Limestone County. It was created in 1969 after the merger of The Alabama Courier and Limestone Democrat.
  • 10. The Cullman Times
    Published by Community Holdings Inc., the Times serves Cullman County, Alabama.
