The Top 10 Connecticut Daily Newspapers by Circulation

Newspapers began appearing in Connecticut midway through the 18th century, in the 1750s, with newspapers appearing in New Haven, New London, and Hartford (with the Courant, still publishing to this day).

    The Courant has been described as the oldest continuously published newspaper in the U.S., having been founded more than 250 years ago, in 1764. It’s published in Hartford.
  • 2. Manchester Journal Inquirer
    The Journal Enquirer serves 17 communities and is more than 200 years younger than the Courant, having been founded in 1968.
  • 3. Republic-American
    Formed after the merger of the Waterbury American and Waterbury Republican, the Republic-American can trace its roots back to 1844.
  • 4. New Haven Register
    Published by Hearst and serving an area comprising 19 communities throughout New Haven and Middlesex counties.
  • 5. Danbury News-Times
    Published by Hearst and covering Danby and other communities including Brookfield, New Fairfield, Newtown, Bethel, Ridgefield, Redding, and Roxbury.
  • 6. The Day (New London)
    Formerly The New London Day, The Day was founded in 1881 and has won several awards for top journalism since its inception, including Horace Greeley Award twice.
  • 7. Meriden Record-Journal
    Founded in 1867 originally as The Weekly Visitor, the Record-Journal is published by the Record-Journal Publishing Co.
  • 8. Connecticut Post
    Published in Bridgeport, the Post was founded in 1883 and serves Fairfield County and the Lower Naugatuck Valley.
  • 9. The Norwalk Hour
    Published by Hearst in Norwalk, the Hour was founded in 1871.
  • 10. Stamford Advocate
    Based in Stamford and published by Hearst, the Advocate was founded in 1829 and serves Stamford and the surrounding communities of Darien and New Canaan.
