The first newspaper ever published in Louisiana, the Courrier de la Louisiane, was founded in 1807 and ceased publication just before the American Civil War, in 1860.

Published in Baton Rouge by Georges Media, the Advocate serves southern Louisiana including Baton Rouge and Lafayette. It publishes a separate edition for New Orleans entitled The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate (below).

Founded in 1837, the current iteration of the paper was formed after a 2019 merger between The Times-Picayune and the New Orleans edition of The Advocate. The Times-Picayune won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2006 for its Hurricane Katrina coverage.
