The Top 10 Montana Daily Newspapers by Circulation

Newspapers were an important source of information for the settlers of the American west, and the state of Montana was no exception. The first newspaper in the state, the Montana Post, began publishing in 1864 in an era when gold was still the preferred currency. Montana became an official state more than two decades later.

    Founded in 1885 as the Billings Daily Gazette, the Gazette claims to be one of the most widely distributed newspapers (geographically) in the U.S. with delivery to 120 towns across 270,000 square kilometres.
  • 2. Great Falls Tribune
    Winner of a Pulitzer Prize for exploratory journalism in 2000, the Tribune was founded in 1884 and is published by Gannett.
  • 3. Bozeman Daily Chronicle
    Founded as a weekly in 1883, the Chronicle switched to a daily publication schedule in 1996.
  • 4. Daily Inter Lake
    Published in Kalispell and serving Flathead and Lake counties.
  • 5. Missoulian
    Published in Missoula and founded in 1870, the Missoulian is the largest and most widely distributed paper in western Montana.

    Published in Helena, the Independent Record (or “IR” for short) was founded in 1867.
  • 7. Montana Standard
    Published in Butte by Lee Enterprises, the Standard was founded in 1928.
  • 8. Ravalli Republic
    The Republic serves Ravalli along with Bitterroot Valley, Hamilton, Corvallis, Stevensville, Darby, Victor, and Florence.
  • 9. Havre Daily News
    Published in Havre in the afternoons, the Daily News was founded in 1928 and serves the Havre area as well as the Hi-Line of north-central Montana.
  • 10. The Livingston Enterprise
    Published in Livingston and serving Park County in southwestern Montana.
