The Top 10 Texas Daily Newspapers by Circulation
Most of Texas’s original newspapers didn’t survive past the Texas Revolution against Mexico in the 1830s, with nine publishers distributing newspapers between 1819 and 1836. By the time Texas had achieved U.S. statehood in the 1840s, however, the number of newspapers in the state had ballooned to 36.

1. Houston Chronicle
The Houston Chronicle is published by Hearst Corp. and is the largest daily in Texas. It was founded in 1901 and is considered to be Houston’s newspaper of record.

2. Dallas Morning News
Founded in 1885, the Dallas Morning News is published by the A.H. Belo Corp. and serves the Dallas-Forth Worth area. It has won nine Pulitzers for reporting and photography.

3. Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Originally founded as the Fort Worth Star in 1901, the Star-Telegram is published by The McClatchy Co. and serves the Metroplex area of North Texas.

4. San Antonio Express-News
The largest paper in San Antonio is published by Hearst Corp. and was founded in 1865. It publishes online as both expressnews.com and mysa.com.

5. Austin American-Statesman
Founded in 1871 and published by Gatehouse Media, the Statesman also publishes a weekly Spanish-language newspaper, ¡ahora sí!.

The El Paso Times is El Paso’s daily newspaper. It’s published by Gannnett and was founded in 1881, originally as a weekly.

Focus Daily News is the new kid on the block in this list, having been founded in 1987 and published by Publishers Newspapers in DeSoto. It covers Dallas County.

The Monitor is based in McAllen, Texas and was founded in 1909. It covers Starr and Hidalgo counties and is published by AIM Media Texas.

Founded in 1883 as simply the Caller, this newspaper has existed for as long as there’s been a town of Corpus Christi. It’s currently published by USA Today Network.
