Like most eastern U.S. states, Virginia’s history with newspapers goes back literally centuries: its oldest daily newspaper, the News-Gazette (Lexington), a weekly, was founded in 1801.

    Also known as the RTD or TD, the Times-Dispatch is Virginia’s newspaper of record. It was founded in 1850 and is owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

    Published by Tribune Publishing in Norfolk, The Pilot serves the five cities of the South Hampton Roads region (Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Hampton and Norfolk) along with other towns across Virginia.

    Published by Berkshire Hathaway and founded in 1886, the Times also covers the eastern region of New River Valley.

    The newspaper of record for Lynchburg is published by Berkshire Hathaway and was founded in 1866 as The News.

    Published by Ogden Newspapers in Harrisonburg, the Daily News-Record can trace its lineage back to the Rockingham Weekly Register, which was founded in 1822.

    The Daily Press was founded in 1896 and is published by Tribune Publishing in the city of Newport News.
  • 9. Bristol Herald Courier
    Another Berkshire Hathaway-owned publication, the Herald Courier was founded in 1865 and is located in Bristol in southwest Virginia.

    Published by Suffolk Publications and founded in 1873, the News-Herald appears six days a week.
