The Top 10 Washington Daily Newspapers by Circulation

Just a few years ago, this list of top Washington state daily newspapers would have had another noteworthy name on it – the Seattle Post Intelligencer, which was founded in 1863 and was the state’s second-largest daily by circulation. The newspaper ceased its print operations and became an online-only publication in 2009.

    The largest daily newspaper in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Times was founded in 1891 and was originally known as the Seattle Press-Times.
  • 2. Spokane Spokesman-Review
    The Spokane Spokesman-Review is the result of an 1894 merger between the Spokane Falls Review and The Spokesman. It’s published by Cowles Co.
  • 3. Yakima Herald-Republic
    Distributed among Yakima, Kittitas, Klickitat and Benson counties and published by The Seattle Times Co.
  • 4. The News Tribune (Tacoma)
    The News Tribune is based in Tacoma and was founded as the Tacoma Ledger in 1880. After a merger and a few ownership changes, the paper adopted its current name in 1979.
  • 5. The Herald (Everett)
    The Herald is based in Everett and serves the surrounding Snohomish County. It is owned by Sound Publishing.
  • 6. The Columbian
    The Columbian serves Vancouver and Clark County, Washington, and was originally known as the Vancouver Columbian.
  • 7. Kitsap Sun
    Published in Bremerton and serving Washington’s West Sound area, including Kitsap, Jefferson, and Mason counties, the Kitsap Sun was founded in 1935 and is published by Gannett.

    Based in Kennewick, the Tri-City Herald was founded in 1918 and is published by The McClatchy Co.
  • 9. The Olympian
    The Olympian is based in Olympia and was the first newspaper ever published in the state, having been founded way back in 1852. It’s published by The McClatchy Co.
  • 10. The Daily News
    Founded in 1923, The Daily News (TDN) is published by Lee Enterprises and serves the areas of Longview, Kelso, and Cowlitz County.
